The reason for the automatic icon arrangement is simple: Sorting. This removes any sorting or arranging of the icons, which are easy to enable either by accident due to the keyboard shortcuts or because you just forgot that you turned sorting on a long time ago. A new separate box will open and at the top is a small click box marked Always open in Icon or List view. Click that so that it has a checkmark, close it, and it will always work that way. I am still looking for a steady solution. I am thinking of changing Parallels with something else. Good luck. Not for all. They are locked in place. Clicking and holding an icon on the Dock produces a menu of choices. For example, if you click and hold on the Trash icon its menu lets you choose to either open the trash or empty it if you have files in the trash.

Locate the application that you want to add to the Dock. Instead, make sure that you see the dock icons scoot to the side to make room for this new icon. There is no way to force icons to go to the left automatically and stay arranged by the criterion you choose. As a workaround, you can change the View Options in Finder to not arrange items by any criterion and place icons manually on the left.

Then under View hit 'clean up. Then you can simply highlight all of the folders and position them exactly where you want them. Macs don't organize folders on the left, only the right, but with a couple of easy steps you can have everything neatly organized on the left.
